Robert L. King

I’ve practiced law for more than thirty-five years, beginning as a law clerk to United States District Judge Elmo B. Hunter in Kansas City. Since then, my work has ranged across an unusually varied collection of cases, clients, courts, and legal problems.

Now

Today I’m a solo practitioner with a small practice by design. I work with other lawyers and a limited number of clients, usually on matters that are difficult enough to benefit from sustained attention.

How I Got Here

I came to law with a habit developed before law school: questioning premises. I majored in history, biology, and philosophy, and became interested in what people believe and how they decide what’s true.

My first job as a lawyer was a judicial clerkship where I quickly learned that the work I did affected real people. Being clever mattered less than being careful.

I started private practice in St. Louis nearly four decades ago. I’ve represented the little guy in big cases, including class actions, False Claims Act litigation, and disputes involving professional liability, health care, employment, insurance, and other subjects that resist tidy categorization.

My work has taken me to courts across the country, including eight of the thirteen federal courts of appeals, multiple federal district courts, the Court of International Trade, and the Supreme Courts of the United States, Illinois, and Missouri. I’m licensed in California, New York, Illinois, and Missouri.
